Historical and Social Background

Southern Leyte Times (SLT) was founded by the late Antonio Mendoza Reyes, as its publisher in August 1999. Mr. Reyes was a former member of then President Ferdinand Marcos’ Presidential Economic Staff, and then a United Nations UNICEF and UNFPA Program Officer.

The idea of establishing a community newspaper was conceived in 1998 when Publisher Reyes and his family decided to move to Maasin City and start a bonefide independent community newspaper in Southern Leyte province.

Its new publisher, the son of the newspaper’s founder, is Atty. Ruevivar Markines Reyes, a law and business graduate, and recipient of the 2013 Outstanding Southern Leyteño Award and 2024 CM Most Outstanding Alumni Award. Atty. Reyes is a Trustee of the Philippine Press Institute (association of philippine newspapers) and board member of different private and socio-civic organizations.

The Editor-in-Chief is Dr. Gloria Markines Reyes, Ph.D., who was a two-term University President of Southern Leyte State University. She is a Philippine Red Cross Southern Leyte Chapter officer of the Board of Directors, and Member of the Southern Leyte Chamber of Commerce, Inc.

SLT’s readers are Southern Leyteños, Filipinos and foreign nationals living in the province, region and abroad, either through its newspaper, news website, or social media account.

SLT’s commitment is to provide its readers and viewers relevant news and information that will help Southern Leyte’s community. As it continues to give “Balance news, Constructive Views” to all Southern Leytenos.
