Health authorities urge responsible pet ownerships and proper response to bites as rabies prevention efforts intensity.
The Provincial Health Services Office (PHSO), through Disease Surveillance Officer and Program Manager Joewil Napuli, reported that there were 8,597 animal bite cases in 2024 and 3, 364 in the first quarter of 2025.
Individuals above 15 years comprise most of the victims, and that community awareness and proactive measures are vital.
Dr. Hilaria Aquino Cadavos, Clinic Chief and Chairperson of the Animal Bite Center at the Salvacion Oppus Yñiguez Memorial Provincial Hospital (SOYMPH) emphasized immediate response and vaccination.
“The first thing to do if bitten is to wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water… Victims should go directly to an Animal Bite Treatment Center.”
Anti-rabies vaccines are free at government health centers if these are available. If not, vaccines maybe purchased from private sources at prices ranging from P1,300 to P1,500.
Vaccination schedules at the Animal Bite Centers are: CHU Manhilo – Monday and Thursday; and SOYMPH – Tuesday and Friday.
Dr. Cadavos reminded the public to complete the full vaccine series of 3-4 doses essential for protection.
An observation period of 14 days is conducted on the biting animal. If the animal dies during observation, the patient must receive four complete dosage.
The Rabies Prevention Program highlights responsible pet ownership as frontline defense against rabies.
Vaccination of dogs is done annually and free of charge through barangay-level veterinary missions.
“Pet owners must commit to proper care… feeding, vaccinating yearly and not allowing pets to roam freely. Letting pets wander can lead to traffic accidents or the spread of rabies”, Cadavos emphasized. (JHilot)
