The local government of Maasin City will implement an ordinance aimed at preventing jaywalking and promoting pedestrian safety. Ordinance No. 2024-243, recently signed by Mayor Nacional Mercado, will regulate street crossing to maintain order and reduce accidents.
Councilor Jigjig Paler, author of the ordinance, said that the law is designed to protect pedestrians and improve traffic flow and road discipline.
The ordinance strictly prohibits crossing the street while the traffic light is red in areas where traffic signals are installed, such as in Barangays Abgao, Tunga-tunga, and Combado. Designated crosswalks can be seen in areas with traffic lights to ensure safer road usage.
Under the ordinance, those caught jaywalking will be required to attend a 30-minute road safety seminar for the first offense. A P150 fine will be imposed for the second offense, while repeat violators will face a P300 fine on their third offense. (DYbañez, Source: Dahlia Orit)
