A 10-year-old boy from Barangay Dinahugan, Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte, has been recorded as the first firecracker-related injury victim in Region 8 during the holiday season, according to the Department of Health (DOH). Keisha Elezze Batalon, the Rural Health Unit (RHU) Focal Person, reported that the boy used “boga” or “lantaka,” typically made from pipes, cans, or bamboo. The boy sustained minor injuries to his eye and was immediately brought to a private hospital in Maasin City for treatment; and was allowed to go home after the treatment. One more injury from Maasin City was reported.

In other developments, the Southern Leyte Provincial Police Office (SLPPO) reported a significant decline of 73% in index crimes during this year’s holiday season. Provincial Director Police Colonel Cristine Tabdi stated in a report that only three cases of index crimes were recorded from December 15 to the end of 2024, compared to 11 cases reported during the same period in 2023.

The majority of the recorded index crime cases involved robbery. Index crimes include offenses such as murder, homicide, robbery, theft, rape, arson, and others.

Col. Tabdi attributed the decline in crimes to the increased deployment of police personnel, enhanced visibility, and regular patrols, particularly at night. Checkpoints have been established to prevent accidents and curb reckless driving.
