SOUTHERN LEYTE – Provincial Governor Damian G. Mercado says that to get enough food supply the province is undertaking the construction of fish hatchery. It is a 1 ½ hectare hatchery compound near the shoreline and along the national highway of barangay San Roque in Macrohon town, which will be finished December this year or on the first quarter of 2023.
The hatchery is a place for artificial breeding, hatching, and rearing. It has spawning tanks used to temporarily hold the gravid females until spawning; reservoir and filtration tanks which filter the sediment and contain it, removing it from the water supply and preventing the potential for pollution or contamination.
The fish hatchery also has algal tanks; rotifer larval rearing tank where the breed (to achieve a size of 10-15 cm) is reared into fingerlings, where the period of culture is 2-3 months; working area/fry and harvest area, administration building, warehouse, pump and generator house. The compound is also secured with fence.
“Kining atong Sogod Bay atong buhian ug daghang mga isda, different kinds of fish nga nia na sa ato, mabuhi na sa ato… Ang atong mga fisherman dili na mamroblema, dili na mag illegal fishing…”, says Governor Damian Mercado on a video played at the 62nd founding anniversary, July 1, 2022.
