Twenty-five members of fisher folk organizations and government service representatives from Maasin, Tomas Oppus, Sogod and Libagon participated in the training on fish processing, value-adding, packaging and labeling, and entrepreneurial mind-set. This was held at the BFAR PFO Southern Leyte Training Center on October 5–6, 2023.
This training was organized by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), in collaboration with Southern Leyte State University-Bontoc Campus and the Department of Trade and Industry- Southern Leyte Provincial Office.
The first topic of the training was an overview of fish processing and Good Manufacturing Practices which was discussed by Shanna May Caballes and Dexter De Leon of the BFAR Training Division. This was followed by a hands-on session on smoked fish processing.
The second topic was packaging and labelling which was discussed by Prof. Jimmy Salamida, Dean of the College of Aquatic and Applied Life Sciences of SLSU Bontoc Campus. This was followed by a hands-on session on packing the smoked fish.
The last topic of the training was the Entrepreneurial mind-setting which was discussed by Marilyn M. Durac and Jammae-Ann Cano from DTI. This topic covered costing and pricing as well as other important aspects of starting and running a successful micro-enterprise.
