“Very simple, but memorable celebration,” that is what Maasin City Mayor Nacional Mercado described the planned Charter Day celebration will be during his press briefing last August 4. Maasin City commemorates its 21st Charter Day Anniversary on August 10, 2021 with the theme, “Ajonay: Pagsagubang sa Pandemya ug Kalamidad.”
The Maasin City Danao Forest Park in barangay Malapoc Norte is the venue of the activities, a distant 14 kilometers from the Maasin poblacion. The intention of LGU Maasin’s decision was to control and prevent the spread of the highly infectious COVID-19.
For this year, talented Southern Leyteño celebrity singers are invited to grace the occasion. The first part of the program begins with tree planting at 6:00 am; second, is the Anniversary Mass at 6:30 am, then followed by the short anniversary program. The national anthem will be rendered by Showtime Semi-finalist Emmar Cabilogan; the Southern Leyte Hymn to be sung by music composer and broadway singer Joanna Ang; and the Maasin City Hymn by Jelian Obligado. To give the anniversary and inspirational messages are Congressman Roger Mercado and Governor Damian Mercado, and Mayor Nacional Mercado. The finale of the celebration is the launching of the Landscaping Contest, Announcement of Winners, and the Ajonay Dance Presentation by Maasin Ajonay Organization.
A Motorcade during afternoon and dazzling fireworks display at 7 o’clock in the evening.
The Maasin municipality was converted into a component city in the Province of Southern Leyte with the approval of Republic Act No. 8796 last July 2000, as was ratified in a plebiscite on August 10, 2000.
