Province population is 429,573

SOUTHERN LEYTE – In the 2020 Philippine Statistics Authority’s Census of Population and Housing survey, the total population of Southern Leyte is 421,750 in 2015 compared to 429,573 in 2020.
Maasin City, Southern Leyte’s capital, has the largest population of 87,446. The city’s tally accounts for 20.36% of the population for the entire province. Sogod comes in second with 47, 552 persons.
In contrast, the three least populated towns are the municipalities of Limasawa with 6,191 persons, Anahawan with 8,429, and Pintuyan with 10,202.
Among the 500 barangays in Southern Leyte, barangays Malinao and Guinsaugon (Saint Bernard) have the smallest population of 42 and 47, respectively. Combado (Maasin City) has remained the most populated barangay, with 5,854 persons.
Southern Leyte’s 2020 population is only 0.39 percent of the country’s total population of 109,035,343.
The results of the 2020 Census on Population and Housing, which was conducted by PSA, was released on July 7, 2021.
“In light of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the PSA has proudly overcome unprecedented challenges to collect and produce high-quality data that are critical in decision-making for good governance, development planning, risk reduction and crisis response, social welfare programs, and business market analyses, among others,” said PSA Undersecretary Dennis Mapa.
