The Fisheries Management Area Coordinating Unit (FCU) Region 8 conducted a comprehensive Livelihood Project Scoping across the municipalities of Liloan, Tomas Oppus, Padre Burgos, and Malitbog, Southern Leyte on August 22 and 23, 2024. This is an effort to deliver timely and effective fisheries livelihood interventions to the beneficiaries of the Fisheries Coastal Resiliency (FishCoRe) Project in the province.
Among the identified beneficiaries under the Modern and Resilient Livelihood Investments component are the Poblacion Fisherfolk Association in Liloan, the Tinago United Fisherfolk Association in Tomas Oppus, the Kapunungang Mananagat sa Dinahugan in Padre Burgos, and the San Jose Fish Farm Association in Malitbog. These associations, primarily composed of sardine fishers within Sogod Bay, are set to receive several units of Bangus Culture in HDPE Modular Cages as an alternative livelihood.
The environmental and social risks and impacts assessment conducted on-site by FCU 8, in collaboration with representatives from the Regional Project Implementation Unit (RPIU) 9 of BFAR Regional Office 10, evaluated the proposed alternative livelihood to develop and implement appropriate environmental and social safeguards or mitigation measures essential for its efficient and responsive implementation.
The FCU 8 has been closely coordinating with the identified Local Government Units and the Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) of Southern Leyte for the immediate and responsive dissemination of interventions and management measures. (Source: FCU 8)
