The City Government of Maasin, in partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), launched Fire Prevention Month on March 3, 2025, under the theme “To Save Lives and Property.” The campaign aims to enhance fire safety awareness and preparedness citywide.
The event began with a motorcade involving various agencies, followed by a program at Maasin City Gym, led by Atty. Earnswell Tan. A symbolic fire horn blast by all BFP units signaled the start of the observance. Atty. Tan highlighted Fire Prevention Month’s origins in 1966 under President Ferdinand Marcos and emphasized the need to intensify fire safety efforts in March.
Activities include a digital art contest, essay writing, and a quiz bee on March 7, along with scuba diving training on March 8. The BFP is hosting an Open House at Maasin City Fire Station, featuring lectures and interactive sessions for schoolchildren. Additional initiatives include tree planting, street cleaning, inspections, fire hydrant testing, and evacuation drills.
A Fire Olympics will identify Southern Leyte’s top fire officers, while a Barangay Olympics will test local communities’ fire preparedness. For 59 years, the BFP has used Fire Prevention Month to unite communities in fostering a fire-safe nation. (Elgia Jorta/ The College of Maasin)
