The significant legislative move of integrating the Southern Leyte Provincial Hospital (SOYMPH) into the Eastern Visayas Regional Hospital, received its approval in the first reading of the House of Representatives. The House bill was penned by 1st District Representative Luz Verano Mercado, as principal author, and Congressman Christopherson “Coco” Yap as co-author.
Housebill No. 2381, titled “An Act Integrating the Southern Leyte Provincial Hospital into the Eastern Visayas Regional Hospital,” underscores the congressmen’s vision to enhance medical services and the healthcare system in the province of Southern Leyte. Recognizing the Southern Leyte Provincial Hospital as a trusted healthcare provider for residents in the province and Region 8, the bill addresses the challenges it faces in meeting the needs of patients due to limitations in facilities and operational funds.
The proposed integration aims to elevate the capabilities of the provincial hospital, especially with the anticipated support from the national government. The bill outlines that the conversion to a regional hospital would lead to improvements, and the necessary funds for operation and maintenance will be included in the annual budget of the Department of Health (DOH).
The provincial congressmen express hope that the proposal will garner approval from the House of Representatives and the Senate, ultimately securing the signature of the President. This legislative initiative reflects a commitment to enhancing healthcare services in Southern Leyte, ensuring that residents have access to improved medical facilities and services through the integration with the Eastern Visayas Regional Hospital.
