The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in Southern Leyte recently held a media forum with the theme “Building a Resilient, Agile, and Future-Fit Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System” at Tomas Oppus St., Tunga-Tunga, Maasin City.

Supervising Statistical Specialist Elissa Carbonilla announced that the province’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 7.3% from 2022 to 2023, compared to a 3.9% growth rate from 2021 to 2022.

This increase brought the province’s GDP to 46.12 billion pesos, reflecting a rise of 4.73 billion pesos from 2021, and 3 billion pesos from 2022.

The Philippine Statistics Authority reported growth across major economic industries, including agriculture, forestry, and fishing (7.7%), industry (6.3%), and services (7.7%). Key contributors to this economic expansion included construction, wholesale and retail trade, motor vehicle and motorcycle repair, and agriculture.

Within Region 8, Southern Leyte recorded the second-highest provincial growth rate at 7.3%, trailing Eastern Samar, which led with 8.1%.
Carbonilla clarified that the PSA sourced its data from national government agencies, local government units, and provincial agencies such as SOLECO and Primewater. (Elgia Jorta /College of Maasin)
