SOUTHERN LEYTE – There are still four months to go before the year 2023 ends but there are already eight suicide cases in Maasin City, which is recorded as the place with highest incidents in the province, according to information from the Southern Leyte Police Provincial Office. In comparison, there were only four suicide cases in Maasin City for the whole year of 2022, or 50% less suicide incidents last year than this year.
Next to Maasin City is Saint Bernard with two cases this year and three cases in 2022. In 2022, the other municipalities that posted suicide cases were Bontoc with three cases, Hinunangan with 2 cases, Liloan with 2 cases, Sogod with 2 cases and Tomas Oppus with 2 cases. Then the municipalities of Hunundayan, Malitbog and Silago had one suicide incident each for 2022.
In addition to the above information for 2023, suicide cases were reported in the municipalities of Bontoc, Hinunangan, Libagon, Liloan, Malitbog, Silago and Tomas Oppus with one suicide incident each.
As of this writing, Southern Leyte has a total of 17 suicide cases for 2023, and 21 cases in 2022.
According to the police report, most of the reasons why the person took his/her own life was due to Depression. Combining last year and this year’s data, there was a total of 14 suicide cases due to depression. Second was, Depression due to Family Problem with eight cases; Depression due to Love life problem with five cases. There were three suicide cases who were depressed due to Health issues, and two suicide incidents who were depressed due to problem with finances.
The report also included six suicide cases due to Mental Illness.
