On August 11, the esteemed tenor Sal Malaki delivered a world-class performance at the UCCP Church in Maasin City, captivating a hall filled with enthusiastic listeners.
The concert began with Malaki’s powerful rendition of sacred music, opening with Steve Green’s “God and God Alone.” He was then joined by local tenor Osias Rodriguez for a stunning duet of “Light of a Million Mornings.”
In his second set, Malaki took the audience on a nostalgic journey through classic melodies. He performed timeless pieces such as “Be My Love,” and selections from “The Sound of Music,” including “Edelweiss” and “Climb Every Mountain.” The set also featured beloved tunes from Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, including “If I Loved You” from Carousel and “Some Enchanted Evening” from South Pacific.
The third set showcased Malaki’s international flair, with captivating performances of “Granada – Fantasia Espanola” in Spanish, and Italian classics such as “O Sole Mio,” “Torna a Surriento,” and “Nessun Dorma.” Rising tenor Dominique Orito joined him for this powerful segment.
During the intermission, young pianist Rhyz Camelo Gaviola Ang impressed the audience with his performance of “Jazzin Ominaisuudet” by Teida Kukan.
The final set celebrated local music, accompanied by guitarist Joey Alcober. The audience was treated to heartfelt renditions of Visayan songs like Beaunoni Espina’s “Balik Pinangga,” “Usahay” performed by tenor Orito, “Kahibulungan,” “Sakayanon,” and “Matud Nila,” covered by tenor Rodriguez. The set concluded with a spirited group performance of “Bol-anon,” leaving the audience deeply moved.
Malaki concluded the concert on a high note with a spectacular finale, performing Steve Amerson’s “This Could Be the Day,” leaving the audience in awe.
