The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvocs) has recorded recent quakes in Region 8 as high as Intensity 5. Its instruments measured the earthquakes with the following reading,
Sogod, Southern Leyte experienced intensity 3, along with Alang alang, Carigara and Leyte province in Leyte. Intensity 5 was recorded in Pastrana and Ormoc City in Leyte; intensity 4 in Palo, Abuyog, and Tacloban City in Leyte; intensity 2 in Calubian, Leyte. Phivolcs warned residents against aftershocks that would likely occur.
Philvocs said that the earthquake was tectonic in origin, which means that it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
Phivolcs advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
