Maasin City airport part of Mercado’s term focus

SOUTHERN LEYTE – First District Representative Luz Verano Mercado will continue the unfinished projects of her husband former Congressman Roger G. Mercado, according to a recent video uploaded by Maasin City Admin Aide – IV Lorraine Acasio.
During the October 8 press conference attended by different media outfits in Southern Leyte at Kinamot sa Abgao, Maasin City, Congresswoman Luz promised to fast track the construction of Panan-awan Airport and Guadalupe sea port.
The Panan-awan airport, located near the highway of the west-side border of Southern Leyte and Matalom, Leyte, has been under construction for two decades now. With a commercially functional airport, access to the province from other places like Manila will be easier. This will also boost tourism and other business activities in the province.
Congresswoman Luz Mercado also mentioned the river control project in barangay Sta. Sofia, Padre Burgos which is scheduled to start next year, and the seaports in different places of the province, especially in barangay Guadalupe. The Guadalupe seaport, which is geographically suited for sea travels to Bohol and Cebu, needs dredging and revisit according to port construction experts.
Mercado has 11 principally authored bills mostly on Tourism, National Defense and Security, Committee on Youth and Sports, Education, Public Information, Economic Affairs, Legislative Franchise, Agriculture and Food, Natural Resources and Appropriations, according to the report.
She also said that the projects in the second district should be given importance, “Dili nato biyaan ang ikaduhang distrito kay usa ra ang probinsya,” like the construction of Liloan Bridge which is now on-going, the improvement of the Saddle Road connecting Pintuyan to San Francisco town, the construction of a waterway to connect the area from Liloan to San Ricardo in the eastern part of Panaon, and the continuous expansion of roads, and river controls.
Meanwhile, Second District Congressman Christopherson Yap filed 56 bills for Fisherfolks, Senior Citizens, Labor and Employment, Agriculture and Food, Health, Basic Education and Culture, Public Works and Highways, Government Enterprises and Privatization, Tourism, Local Government, Justice, Aquaculture and Fishery Resources, Transportation, Information and Communications Technology, Trade and Industry, Natural Resources, Appropriations, Rules and Public Order and Safety.
