SOUTHERN LEYTE – The town of Padre Burgos was declared as the second best in a national award for Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan (MMK). The awarding hosted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) was held at Luxent Hotel, National Capital Region, last November 22, 2022. Padre Burgos Mayor Hermenegildo C. Culpa, Vice-Mayor Freiche Barcelon Poblete and other staff were there to receive the said award.
“After the conduct of the 2-day national validation for Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan of the municipality of Padre Burgos, only Padre Burgos qualified in the entire region and only 5 municipalities in the entire Philippines,” Vice-Mayor Poblete said in a facebook post.
Padre Burgos, including two other municipalities particularly Caluya, Antique and Sagñay Camarines Sur, won against 42 coastal areas in the Philippines.
The said annual MMK contributes to the promotion of sustainable coastal management and food security.

Their initiatives included coastal water cleanliness; establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) such as protection and rehabilitation of mangroves; fishery law enforcement such as closed fishing season and legal fishing; informative campaigns, and funding and implementing the local orders.
